An ornithopter is a flying machine that flaps its wings like a bird. In this case it gets its power from a special rubber band, the type specifically for lightweight flying machines like this one. See it in action in the video below.

Launching the ornithopter is done by tilting its nose up slightly and giving a gentle nudge while releasing it.
